Yoga Classes at Castara Retreats

Guests attracted to yoga will be pleased to hear that Yoga classes are now available on Sunday mornings in the beautiful gardens at Castara Retreats.

Elspeth Duncan is a Trinidadian yoga teacher who offers tailored classes to suit the interests of the participants. Popular themes that she teaches are love, inner peace, empowerment and self-awareness.  Her sessions are available to those new to yoga and to experienced practitioners.  Participants are led according to their ability.
Elspeth is an experienced and fully qualified Kundalini Yoga instructor. She has been practicing since 2000. Alongside her yoga teaching, Elspeth is a writer, musician, film maker and photographer. To read more visit her website.

What is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga is called the Yoga of Awareness. It is a dynamic, powerful tool that is designed to expand your awareness and sense of well-being. In Kundalini Yoga, students harness the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual energies of the body with approaches that precisely and consciously combine breath, eye-focus, mantra, body positions and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, and purify the blood. It helps improve a sense of balance and well-being within our mind and body.

Kundalini Yoga classes involve posture sequences (kriya), breathing techniques, meditation, and yoga mantras (sung by Elspeth). The kriya aspect of the class involves a series of postures, breath and sound to initiate a sequence of physical and mental changes that positively and simultaneously benefit the body, mind, and spirit. Examples of kriyas include those that increase the flexibility of the spine, support the liver, balance the glandular system and help you feel radiant. Each kriya has a different and focused effect that also works on all levels of your being.

In Kundalini Yoga, meditation contains specific, practical tools to carefully support the mind and guide the body through the use of breathing and focus. There are hundreds of meditations tailored to specific applications, e.g. to reduce stress, increase vitality, improve positivity, to name a few. While there exist many forms of meditation, what differentiates this approach is its scientific precision, effectiveness, and practicality.

Costs and how to book

Sunday morning class (9am-10:30): $100tt per person. If you wish to attend, please let Porridge know in advance. All welcome.

Privately arranged classes: These can be arranged for individuals and couples and can be set up through Porridge or with Elspeth via her website. Costs are as follows:

  • One-to-one: $400TT  (approximately £40)
  • Couple's session: $600TT (approximately £60). This is tailored class for the couple’s need and interest.
