Notes for Visitors

Local People
People can be taken at face value and are nearly always
trustworthy. A number of people locally will offer boat
trips, fishing trips, guided tours of the rainforest. Try to
agree a price in advance of the trip. Some will say “give me
whatever you think“ and then it is up to you.
If you indicate you are open to visitors, there will always
be takers for a Carib or a rum punch on the deck. However,
if you need your privacy, indicate this politely and clearly
and people will back off. Women on their own have to be
rather firmer, but their position will be respected as long
as they don’t give out mixed messages.
The only animosity towards white people that we have heard
about in the village is when people take photos of the
fishermen when the seine nets are being pulled in. It is
important to ask permission first and to respect their
wishes.
