Doctors/Health

There is a health centre just before Max’s supermarket, where a qualified nurse will offer advice. A doctor visits the health centre once a week, currently on a Tuesday, but check with Porridge in case the day changes. Visiting Scarborough hospital is to be avoided - there are long delays before you are seen, apparently.

myTobago.info has kindly allowed us to publish a list of doctors, dentists and pharmacies from their web site- a comprehensive list can be found there; we thought it would be helpful to clients to have some key phone numbers to hand, though we have listed the complete pharmacy list because there are so few on the island:

Mosquito repellents are a good idea. We used to buy those that have 50% Deet because there have been a few instances of dengue fever - now found in the Caribbean, Florida, Mexico, and South America, as well as all of the Far East. There is a very low risk of catching it, but be aware that it is only carried by day time biting mosquitoes and the risk goes up in highly populated areas with the possibility of poor sanitation. However, we now use citronella oil mixed with coconut oil base, which we find very effective.

For advice on vaccinations etc we suggest you talk to your doctor. Make sure your polio and tetanus are up to date. We were recently advised by our GP to vaccinate against hepatitis A (after 10 years of being completely lax).
